For the last six years, turtles have held my heart. I spent the last two years of my undergraduate degree working with freshwater turtles, so when I discovered an opportunity to volunteer through GoEco with sea turtles in the Maldives, I was thrilled! My partner and I spent two weeks living on Naifaru, working at the Atoll Marine Conservation center with their wonderful turtles and a volunteer community from all over the world. The chance to not just see the turtles, but be involved in meaningful care for them such as cleaning their enclosures and preparing their meals, allowed us to know the animals and their quirks in a way no day-long tour of a center like this could ever provide. Our accommodations were beautiful and comfortable, and every meal was spent at a local restaurant, laughing and chatting with new friends from all over the world. I only wish we'd stayed another week or two!
