I've been using Grok on grok.com for about 3 months now, sticking with the free version, though I've seriously considered upgrading to the paid plan just to see what extra features it brings.
Out of all the AI assistants I've tried, my two absolute favorites for everyday conversations, asking questions, getting help with code, spelling, grammar, and general tasks are Grok and Google's Gemini. I've had both good and bad experiences with each of them over time, but one area where Grok really stands out for me is the customization options in the settings. The custom instructions for response style and behavior are far more responsive and reliable than what Gemini offers—Google's system often ignores saved memories or specific commands, but I rarely run into that issue with Grok.
Once you take the time to set up the custom Grok instructions properly (things like tone, format preferences, or specific guidelines), the responses become incredibly consistent and helpful. For example, adding clear directions like "Always double-check everything thoroughly before responding, and output final results in a clean code box for easy copying" makes a huge difference in the quality and usability of the output.
I suspect a lot of the negative reviews I've seen about Grok come from people who either didn't know about these customization settings or didn't spend a few minutes tweaking them to fit their needs. When you get those dialed in, Grok performs reliably and delivers exactly what you're looking for.
Overall, it's become one of my go-to tools, and I'm genuinely impressed with how well it works on the free tier.
