Title: Warning: easy to mistake this for the hotel's official booking site
We intended to book directly with the Sheraton New York Times Square Hotel but ended up on GuestReservations.com by mistake. The site and search result we clicked appeared to be the official hotel website. The URL attached the result made it very easy to assume we were booking directly with the hotel. (sheratontimessquare.guestreservations.com)
We noticed the error immediately after booking and contacted them within 24 hours to cancel. We were rejected as the reservation was non-refundable.
This is not an isolated experience. NBC News reported on GuestReservations.com by name, describing another traveler who searched for a hotel, clicked a link that started with the hotel's name, and didn't realize he was on a third-party platform until after completing the booking.
We recommend verifying the domain carefully before entering any payment details. If the URL doesn't end in the hotel's own domain, you are likely on a third-party site with very different cancellation terms.
