I’ve been a customer of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance for over 11 years, and I’m extremely disappointed with how recent changes to my policy were handled.
My main issue is that my dog’s deductible was effectively changed mid-policy year. My dog’s deductible period runs May–May, and I had already fully met the $250 deductible for the current policy year. Before the March 11 policy anniversary, I had a lengthy call with a supervisor specifically to understand how upcoming changes that Healthy Paws forced on me would be applied. I was told that this dog’s deductible would reset in May. However, after the March 11 change, I was required to pay an additional $250 before reimbursement resumed- effectively turning a $250 deductible I had already satisfied into a $500 deductible months before the stated reset date.
While Healthy Paws did notify me in advance that my reimbursement would be reduced from 90% to 70% and that my deductible would increase from $250 to $500 (which I was also very unhappy about), what was not clearly disclosed was that this change would be applied in a way that overrides an already-met deductible mid-cycle. I have reviewed the entire 11 years of policy documents and have not found anything that clearly states they can change a deductible mid-policy year and require additional payment after it has already been satisfied.
To make matters more frustrating, the policy anniversary date (March 11) is tied to when I enrolled my first dog, yet my second dog’s deductible period remains on a different schedule (May–May). This mismatch creates a confusing situation where policy changes are applied at one time, but deductibles are tracked on another- making it very difficult for customers to understand what they actually owe and when.
I have since reached out to Healthy Paws for clarification on this issue and was told that one of their “Licensed Insurance Producers” would contact me, but they did not. After more than a decade as a customer, I do not feel this situation was handled transparently or fairly, and I’m sharing this so other pet owners are warned how these changes may be applied in practice.
