I was explicitly offered one year free when upgrading Hilo so I could take readings via my phone camera (not be limited to three per month), in addition to the kit I had already purchased. I have a screenshot clearly stating: “Free for the first year, then £79.99/year – cancel anytime before renewal.” On that basis, I proceeded expecting no charge until renewal.
Despite this, I was immediately charged £79.99 via Apple without my consent.
Apple has since processed a refund, but at the time of writing Hilo downgraded my account instead of honouring the free year that was promised and evidenced. This resulted in unnecessary time, stress, and back-and-forth to resolve something that should never have happened. This isn’t about the money — it’s about principle and how customers are treated. I run businesses myself and would never handle customers this way.
As someone with a heart condition, this caused avoidable distress. While the refund is in progress, charging first and resolving later reflects poor subscription practices and a lack of accountability.
I strongly advise anyone considering Hilo to be very cautious with the subscription model and “free” offers, and to check billing carefully!
