Unsatisfactory customer service and delivery issues

I ordered a gift with a delivery date a couple of weeks out, which I was assured would arrive on time. The given delivery date was December 18-19. On December 19, the gift had not yet arrived, and there was no communication. I reached out to inquire about my order and received an email later that evening stating it had just been dispatched. It was the usual automated message, not a response to my inquiry or an apology for the delay. Had I known it would arrive later, I would have canceled it as it was needed by the 19th! The lack of communication about the delay was disappointing.
