I've been using HomeExchange for over 10 years, when it was still called GuestToGuest. The name has changed, but the concept remains, only with better usability of the website or the app.
I like that there is no money exchanged between guests and hosts, but I also like the GuestPoints feature as it really helps finding the right exchange home in the location and dates I want. I am a little bit disappointed by the company recently allowing hosts to ask for a cleaning fee. I know in some cases it is fully justified, especially for secondary homes, but I feel it has opened the doors to some people not really adhering to the exchange concept.
I like that the membership fee includes insurance in case of accidents. I remember that it was a big deciding factor for me the first time I joined.
Exchanging my home when my children were young really allowed us more comfortable holidays and travelling lighter too, knowing that there will be space, toys and all the kitchen and bathroom equipment you need.
Overall, I am a strong advocate to HomeExchange, both as a host and a guest!
My advice to anyone who's a bit anxious about joining is:
- first, just have a browse, see if there are hosts where you want to go
- second, chat to the HomeExchange ambassadors. They are people who have been using HomeExchange a lot and they will answer all your questions and worries honestly. They are not sales people!
- third, when you've decided to join, try first a reciprocal exchange, where the people who will come to your house are also the owners of the house where you'll go. This somehow increases the trust level. And even better if you all speak the same language.
