Complaint Against Home Warranty of The Midwest Inc. – Denied Sprinkler System ClaimI am filing this complaint regarding Home Warranty of The Midwest Inc. and their handling of a denied claim related to our sprinkler system, despite our purchase of premium coverage with an add-on specifically for sprinkler systems.We purchased our home in October 2024 in North Dakota, along with the premium home warranty package and sprinkler system coverage add-on through this company. Due to the climate in North Dakota, sprinkler systems are routinely winterized in September or October to avoid freeze damage. As soon as we moved in, we hired a licensed sprinkler technician to blow out the system for the winter.Sprinkler systems in this region are not typically used again until late May, after the last freeze. We followed this normal schedule and hired a professional to perform the spring startup in May 2025. During that inspection, the technician found that several valves were not functioning properly in different zones of the system.I filed a claim with Home Warranty of The Midwest Inc., assuming the issue would be covered. However, the claim was denied, with the company citing that the issue was a "pre-existing condition." This conclusion is extremely unfair and, in my opinion, misleading. The system was winterized upon move-in, was not in use, and could not have been tested or reasonably known to be defective until the spring activation months later.Furthermore, the company does not have any partnered technicians in our area, forcing us to locate our own service provider—something most homeowners may struggle with, especially when many local companies refuse to work with this warranty provider due to poor past experiences.We purchased the premium package to avoid exactly these kinds of unexpected repair costs, only to discover that coverage is denied when we need it most. I feel this company engages in deceptive practices by offering add-on coverage that they later refuse to honor under unreasonable interpretations of “pre-existing conditions.”This experience has been frustrating, costly, and disappointing. I am requesting assistance from the BBB in urging Home Warranty of The Midwest Inc. to honor the coverage we paid for and to approve this legitimate claim.
