We had our cat and dog under the care of a veterinary practice that was independent until IVC bought them out. The changes that occurred were hugely detrimental to the pets and the practice itself. Before the buy-out the vets at the practice were friendly, family types that clearly cared for their patients and wanted to see each and every one of them walk out the door happy, healthy and with owners that were satisfied and confident of their care. In the odd occasion that a pet might need to be put down it was clear that the vet that had the sad duty to do so was clearly upset.Since the buy-out there have been a raft of changes including two new vets and a business manager appointed to the practice. These three new people were pushing at every opportunity to have us spend money on tests, extra checkups, X-rays and drugs for "just in case" conditions. All of this is simply to drive up the costs and make money for IVC's greedy shareholders. The vets were obviously told not to be as friendly and to upsell at every opportunity, even trying firstly to sell expensive funeral and cremation plans to people whose animals were sick rather than to try and get them healed and home to begin with. One of the original practice owner vets then retired and personally rang a huge number of the owners registered there to express his sadness and apologies as this was not what he was told would happen. Since that time he has joined several other nearby practices as a locum for when their regular staff vets are away as well as offering special care for certain types of dogs and cats with particular needs. What would I therefore say to anyone trying to register a pet with a vet? Always find out if the practice is privately owned and operated, if not then check out which of the big 6 the practice is run by and avoid it like the plague if IVC is mentioned anywhere in the details. They simply don't care about animals, only rinsing their customers for money.
