Waste of time - avoid.
Viewed a car, they showed us a completed checklist of various checks they’d done on it, clearly said the car could be taken that day if the sale completed. I went away to think about it that afternoon, then paid to reserve the car online, called their head office to let them know that I’d be back the next morning to pay for and collect the car and asked for them to have it ready for me, which they assured me it would be.
Went in the next morning as arranged. I was asked how I was paying etc, filled in the form and went for a test drive. Just before I did, the salesman that was with me said to his manager he needed to have a word with him which they went and did in another room, there were other customers present so I had no inkling it was related to my purchase, and nothing was said to me. I was still under the impression I’d be taking the car as long as all was ok with the test drive.
Get back after, salesman says “I have some bad news, you can’t take the car today”, then said it had to go to Peterborough for its checks to be done and would take around a week. This was annoying, as I needed a car and they’d told me I could take it same day. Also given that they’d showed us a completed checklist the day before, I cannot fathom what further checks needed to be done. I called their head office to ask why I was advised I could take it when I couldn’t, they blamed a “miscommunication” but said not to worry, as I’d reserved it, and they would deliver to me FOC once it had had its “checks”.
I then called them a few days later to see if there was an update as I’d heard nothing, and the website was showing the car as sold. Was promised a call back which never materialised. Called again to chase, their head office said the local branch needed to contact me because they didn’t know what was going on, and it was showing the car was still at that branch (???). The branch then called with a story of it going onto the ramp and them realising it had head gasket issues and had had to be returned to the person they were selling it on behalf of, and started going on about how head gasket issues are dangerous - duh. They said they could have a look if they have anything similar for me but I’d rather swim naked in the Channel than buy anything from these guys, so I asked for my reservation deposit to be returned.
I’m glad really as I feel like I’ve dodged a bullet, I also don’t believe their story about the head gasket, or the “checks” it needed - I think they sold it to someone else, probably that was buying their finance, which I wasn’t.
So yes, avoid.
