I am a regular customer from the neighbourhood. Sometimes I am disappointed with certain aspects the way the store is run, nothing is perfect in this world, we just cope with it. But this morning, I was made feeling very humiliated and embarrassed. On some odd occasions, there are boxes of fruits and vegetables on the bench after checkout, there was a sign saying "No waste" or something, therefore I picked up a few items from the boxes which I thought could be added as ingredients in today's cooking. I thought the idea is, since they are quickly perishable, people are welcome to make use of them to avoid wastage of food. This morning, after I checked out from the cashier, I saw three boxes of food there, so I approached them and chose what I thought would be useful. The cashier sitting at the counter called out for my attention, I turned around and she said I had to pay £2 for each box, I said I didn't mind paying the £2 but I only wanted a few items, not the whole box, but she said no, I had to take the whole box. I put the items that I had just picked back into the boxes and I didn't find any sign or note explaining this system. I felt very embarrassed as there were a long queue at the counter and everyone was watching this awkward incident being played out. It feels like I am taking things without paying. If this had been done in a better way, this embarrassment could have been avoided.
