VERY dependent on the baby.

I have used this sleep training program for my two children. First time round, my son’s sleep cues were very subtle and I hadn’t realized he was constantly overtired making the bedtime at night very difficult (cue nighttime strolls and drives). The sleep and wake times worked really well for him as well as where he was in his motor development (he couldn’t pull himself up at 6 months so that didn’t hinder settling). We were in lockdown so we could work around him.Second time round, I tried it with my daughter. The experience could not have been more different. Leaving her to self settle DID NOT WORK if she didn’t want to do so. She’d pull herself up and fall down constantly, hurting herself. She was very easy to read cues of tiredness so going with those instead of the sleep schedule was more successful. She naturally wanted a longer morning nap. If I cut her morning nap short, she would never manage more than 40 minutes at lunch no matter how much I tried to resettle again, and again, and again. Someone else asked on the village asked about swapping the naps round for the same reason and their answer was “they have a natural lull around midday so sleep better” which made me really cross. They’ve clearly said it DOESN'T work better and yet the sleep advisor gave a non applicable and robotic answer. There were a few other reasons why it didn’t work well at all for us second time, including really being damaging for my mental health and actually making me feel angry towards my baby “this should be working!!”. It actually made her sleep much worse because we’d both started to associate the routine with high levels of stress. And when I packed it all in, gave her as much love as she needed while going to sleep, listened to the sleep cues she so clearly gave me, was responsive to how the night had been when determining when her first nap might need to be, she started beautifully falling into a pattern and went from waking every 1-2 hours at night to once a night, and consistently joining cycles in the day on her first nap too. Moral of story: if it works, it works. If it doesn’t, it is completely inflexible and the cracks in the program and the adaptability of the knowledge of the advisors really start to show.
