Michael Hill refused to honour a $500 gift card.

December 2023Michael Hill refused to honour a $500 gift card, my question is how much does Michael Hill collect per year by not honouring, lost, damaged, or out of date cards.UPDATE 25/01/2024 I contacted customer servicesSent 17/01/2024 Hi, Michael HillTo recap, my partner received a $500 gift card for her 60th birthday on May 2020, during the next 3 yrs she had bouts of poor health and of course as you know Victoria had the most lock-downs in all of Australia. (262 days between March 2020 -October 2021.Last August or September 2023 we went to Michael Hill (Chirnside Park branch) to be told in a rather curt manner by the aged assistant, that the gift card had expired, I pointed out the lockdowns etc and she barked back that they had been open for a year since Covid ( so 1 year of 3 was available to shop) As we are both classed as vulnerable we barely left the house during covid, anyway I had to insist I speak to the manager, who was as helpful and courteous as he could be, after making some calls all he could suggest was contacting head office and look up consumer laws. We did write to customer services who sent a standard reply of 'out of date gift card, can't help. Not really good enough in my opinion as we were floored that the expiry date would not/ could not be extended under the unique circumstances. I will add the whole family chipped in towards the gift card for a special 60th birthday.Hopefully the card can be extended as a gesture of goodwill.Yours sincerelyEdward After another refusal to help us I looked up consumer law and found this.''Consumer Rights There are certain situations where the rights of a consumer may be affected. As a business owner, you must ensure that the consumer is protected. For example, suppose you must close or temporarily restrict your trading for an extended period. In that case, you should provide some form of remedy so that the consumer can still use the gift card. This includes extending the gift card expiry date to cover the period recipients could not use the card. Another example is when you have purchased a business where the previous owner issued gift cards. As the new business owner, you should still honour existing gift cards, especially if you have purchased the business as a ‘going concern’. Still they won't help- this is not their money it belongs to our family, to me it is tantamount to theft.I would give no stars if I could- disgraceful!!!
