Gift purchase turned disappointing due to unexpected charges

Bought as a gift on December 2 and opened only on Christmas. The gift giver was taken aback by a charge for a premium subscription, and the company has declined to issue a refund despite the lack of a reasonable trial period, even if it had functioned as promised. A professional IT expert has been unable to make it work; it seems my internet service provider is the issue, which I cannot control. It's being returned!
