I'm a US/UK dual citizen, living (and paying taxes) in the UK for the past 30 years. I've always filed my required US tax return through a tax professional in the US. But having become increasing unhappy with them (not least because I appear to understand the tax treaty better than they do!), I did a LOT of research and tested out many of the proliferation of expat online tax services. MyExpatTaxes is far and away the best of what I tested. I used the Basic service as I'm now retired and I only have pension income. They asked every question I would have expected and some I did not even consider ... this is important because a similarly named provider did not ask the right questions & at the end said I owed US tax when I knew that the tax treaty covered all my income. Again, this is especially important for retirees, because there is a special provision in the Tax Treaty for US Social Security payments that are also taxed in the UK, and MyExpatTaxes covers this. Make sure you have all your income and tax payment info to hand, and don't be freaked out when they ask what % of your total tax paid is paid against each separate bit of income, it's easy to figure out. It still took me a good few hours as I wasn't used to the format and missed some bits the first time around. So be patient and take your time. It will definitely be worthwhile. I highly recommend.
