I recently reached out to Napthens solicitors to assist with the purchase of a property. From the conveyance quotes I was provided, the only job they had carried out was my ID checks. Then, I asked the conveyor not to carry out any further works because of a problem with the valuation of the property. After I changed my mind about purchasing the property I was sent a bill of £204 for searches (with water, drainage, flood risk and local authority listed on the bill) which I had clearly asked the conveyor not to carry out. When I queried it, she changed her mind and told me the bill was not for the searches but for the time spent corresponding with me and the estate agents. I called several times for clarifications but my calls was directed to the answering machine.No one told me I will be charged on an hourly basis especially when I had not yet signed a contract.I appreciate we have had 3 calls but paying almost 20 % of my quote when only ID checks have been carried out is an absolute rip off.The most annoying part is how fast they switched from being nice to ignoring my calls.An important lesson I have learnt from this experience is to be wary of solicitors recommended by estates agents.
