It's rare to find genuine tapas-style Taiwanese food in the UK. The essence of "小吃” lies in its small, neat portions. This isn’t due to a lack of appetite; rather, it's about enjoying a small main dish (like dry noodles or rice) alongside a variety of small shared side dishes. These typically include braised meats, tofu, fermented and fresh vegetables, and soup! This communal dining style was hard to find in the UK until this restaurant emerged. It's not about one large dish; Taiwanese cuisine is about sharing a variety of flavors with loved ones. I'm thrilled that an authentic Taiwanese restaurant is now available in North London, close to me. Whenever I crave these flavorful smaller dishes reminiscent of home, I know where to go.
I ordered takeaway last night. They let my order sit and get cold before informing me it was ready for pickup, despite their website's advice on collection time. Considering I live just across the street, I returned home with a £55 takeaway for two that was stone cold and had disappointingly small portions. This was nothing short of disgraceful.
The ambiance and service are pleasant, making it a good spot for drinks and light meals. However, if you're hungry, it might not satisfy you fully. As a discerning diner, I find the food quality above average. I plan to visit again if the portion sizes and prices become more appealing. I'm glad to have enjoyed my first Taiwanese meal in London, which felt quite authentic!
