Be very careful about customs duties!! I bought an Akoya AAA 18inch necklace to give my fiancée on our upcoming wedding day. I am from the UK and chose Pearl Paradise after reading such positive American reviews and due to a lack of Pearl specialism in the UK. The website is great and easy to use and the prices very reasonable. I was excited when I pressed ‘pay now’ that I had managed to add such a special touch to my wedding. On top of the price of the necklace I was charged $40 shipping which I presumed would get the item to me. I was then subject to a charge of £13.49 from my bank due to purchasing in dollars and £97 custom duty from FEDEX for the import of the parcel. This included a £12.99 handling charge from FEDEX!! What I thought was great value for a special item is becoming more and more expensive. In fact, overall the item cost £110 or $155 more than the price label. This is an additional 26% on top of the value of the necklace. This is, however, nothing to do with Pearl Paradise themselves who dispatched the item quickly. It just may be more transparent to have a more accessible commentary about the extent of customs duties at point of purchase for those outside the US. Or maybe I was just inexperienced and naive to duties and tax… never the less… other purchasers will be too!When it arrived, however, it was beautifully packaged and the pearls were amazing. I am delighted, albeit a little poorer than expected.
