I have to say, I am very impressed with the Rug Doctor I used, and the results.
My carpet isn't all that old, but with pets and a lot of foot traffic in certain areas, you can see under certain lighting how it has gotten dirty over time. This prompted me to hire a Rug Doctor in order to hopefully deal with the grime that had clearly accumulated over time.
Upon collecting the machine I saw immediately that the previous user hadn't really taken time, if any, to clean the machine down after use. I had to spend a good 30 minutes or so cleaning out the waste tank, which had a lot of sand and grit in it. The brush under the unit was also very dirty and there was a lot of residual water from previous use the left the inside of the machine smelling musty. I had also found a bolt partially hanging out of the bottom of the machine. I tried to screw this back in but I couldn't find a thread in order to screw it back in. For safety I just pulled it out the rest of the way and put it with the bag with the furniture hose. This to, by the way, was also very dirty.
On first use I followed the instructions, using the recommended amount of detergent. Though it did an excellent job of cleaning the carpet, the Rug Doctor detergent, for use in homes with pets, I purchased to use with the machine had virtually no fragrance. I used a little more on the next fill hoping it would smell better, but it did not. I should have purchased a second bottle of detergent that did have a fragrance because it would have smelt much better as a result.
This is why I gave it 4 stars.
Other than this, the machine worked well, though it got a bit tedious because just to complete one room, roughly 15x10 feet, I had to fill it a total of 5 times. I assume this is influenced by the thickness of the pile of the carpet, but I cannot say for sure.
Overall I am happy with the results. All I would say is that if you do decide to hire a Rug Doctor then be prepared to clean it thoroughly first. And also use a detergent with your desired fragrance. You won't be disappointed.
