This helpline has declined over recent years. Last night, someone called Kay told me suicide is selfish, and some methods are bad for Samaritans as if they involve other people, it could lead to more callers. Kay was useless and had no interest in my situation but she is symptomatic of many of the volunteers. They offer no advice, which is good but you may need to call and hang up repeatedly before a call handler is friendly and approachable. The current rate appears to be one in every eight might be a proper listener. I wonder what their training process is like now as their quality of listening has worsened. Some of the volunteers are very distant and ask the same generic questions to deny your individuality. Many of them simply want to get you off the call. Too many don't care and have minimal understanding of what it is like to suffer. If you're desperate to talk you'll go with whoever answer the call but you can tell within five seconds whether they are any good or not.
