A lot of effort due to outdated technology

I initially decided to take part as it didn't sound like too much effort and the rewards sounded reasonable, however when everything arrived after several weeks the whole process outlined was far more effort than I initially anticipated.The basic process for most shops is to first scan several barcodes in their booklet to indicate the shopper, shop and spending amount. You then need to scan every single item you purchased, if the items were part of a discount/offer the process becomes more complicated as you need to scan special barcodes in the booklet to indicate this - the instructions are a bit ambiguous and don't give a clear example (I asked about this when they phoned me once and they said they'd email me something but nothing ever arrived). Items without barcodes need to be looked up manually in the booklet and scanned.For nearly all shops you then need to scan or photograph your receipts, they then have to be uploaded via a very outdated and unnecessarily complicated website. The process varies depending if you have multiple receipts in one image, several images or multiple receipts. Even if you take your photos with a smartphone you'd then need to transfer the images to the PC first making the process laborious.ShopandScan require transmission at least once a week otherwise you need to inform them ahead of time you won't be doing a transmission, they will let you know if you miss one. It's also specifically by Sunday evening so you need to work to their schedule in terms of the transmissions.The barcode scanner will only work on a Windows PC and requires Internet Explorer - even then it's a bit hit and miss if the barcode scanner is detected or transmits correctly. There are no instructions about what to do if you scan things in the wrong order or if you scan things twice etc. There is basically no information about the barcodes you scan visible anywhere - it's just a dumb device that scan barcodes and stores the information internally.The concept could work but I think they need to get onboard with modern technology - if they had a smartphone app it would make things far less effort - even uploading the receipt images via a smartphone would make the process simpler. It's likely that most modern smartphones could even perform the barcode scanning function and their booklet could be completely built into the app. This would makes the process far less complicated and the transmission could be done immediately. The app could also give better visibility into what you have scanned which is impossible withe the current barcode scanner.ShopandScan were very forceful with their communication to return the barcode scanner once I decided to cancel my membership. Even before the return envelope arrived I received numerous emails requesting return. I posted it as soon as the envelope arrived yet still received several more emails, text messages and even TWO cards arrived in the post with requests to return the barcode scanner after I had returned it.I would be tempted to join the program again in the future if they get onboard with something like a smartphone app, in it's current state it's far too complicated - even for a user familiar with technology. Their websites are very poorly designed and far too complicated for the functionality they offer they really do need to get onboard with today's technology. There is just no cohesion between any of the functions on the website be it the receipt upload, barcode transmission or rewards programme, there is no singe "login" and each page seems to require some detail or another from your account or personal details.
