I booked a car online and ticked what I thought was a no additional insurance box. When I came to pick up the car I received an upgrade as the car I wanted had been booked on a long term basis. That nice upgrade feeling was soon punctured when I was then told that my booking had no insurance as I had declined all insurance. The car hire was 350 euros the insurance 330 for third party or over 500 for fully comprehensive for 10 days. I chose third party.Whilst away the bumper of the car was scraped by another car and I have been billed 660 euros for the damage which I suspect a competent mobile repair could fix for less than 250 euros. The scrape was less than The excess was 900.My lookout, I apparently ticked the box and someone hit the car whilst I hired it.But, I feel conned by Sixt over their hire process. I've hired cars across the world and never had an option not to select insurance and this feels to me as though the website was deliberately misleading to make the hire charges cheap and then hit you with high insurance costs. Netherlands insurance is expensive but 33 euros a day is excessive when you consider the car rental was priced at roughly 35 euros per day. Based on my personal experience I would not recommend Sixt.
