I reserved a compact car for a 12-day trip to a destination. I chose this model intentionally, as larger vehicles often struggle in historic towns. The booking process, insurance, and instructions were seamless.
However, everything fell apart once I interacted with the actual rental provider at the airport. The location was poorly maintained, and they didn’t even have the car I reserved. Despite the positive reviews of the main company being a factor in my choice, the rental provider had numerous negative reviews online. They refused to honor the insurance I had purchased, informed me that I would need to pay a hefty deposit if I didn’t take their coverage, and charged me excessively for insurance I had already secured.
To top it off, I received keys to a completely different vehicle, claiming it was of the same category!
On a positive note, the main company was apologetic and eventually refunded the original insurance fee, although the rental provider only compensated me with a meager amount for the vehicle discrepancy.
The takeaway from this unfortunate experience is to thoroughly research who you are actually renting from, beyond the appealing exterior. I won't repeat this mistake.
