I recently experienced an upsetting incident while taking the bus home from work. As a 23-year-old female, I was on the bus heading towards my stop when the male driver, likely in his mid-30s to early 40s, made a stop at a convenience store to pick up passengers. Just before my stop, I was organizing my bag and briefly put my vape in my mouth, accidentally taking a puff. I usually wait until I'm off the bus to use it, so I didn't think much of it. The driver approached me and stated that smoking was not allowed on the bus. I’m generally not confrontational and apologized, explaining it was an accident and it wouldn't happen again. However, he dismissed my apology, told me he didn't care, and insisted I get off the bus. It was nearing 6 PM and getting dark, and the area around the store is known to be unsafe, especially for a young woman. I expressed my concern about being left there, but he remained unyielding. I admit I called him a prick as I exited, feeling disrespected despite my respectful demeanor throughout. It felt incredibly unfair, especially since I’ve seen others smoke or use drugs on the bus without consequence. I was left in tears, fearing for my safety, especially since my family had to come pick me up.
