Having been a member since 1982 I've had my membership on auto-renewal ever since.
I added my wife in 1990 and paid the extra also by auto renewal.
Unfortunately my wife passed away in 2024 and when I cancelled her membership the call handler was very sympathetic and informed me that my membership had been changed and it should take effect at the beginning of the following month.
Everything seemed all right until I broke down whilst visiting family in the car North of the country, my car was deemed irreparable at the road side and was transported to a garage, I asked about the courtesy car which was part of my original membership, I was then informed that it was no longer part of my membership agreement and I would have to make my own arrangements.
When I eventually got home I checked my bank details to find out what I was actually paying the AA to reconcile it with the service I was receiving.
Apparently my new membership was costing me £24.98 per month, I telephoned the AA to enquire about my membership details and they promised to send my a list of terms and conditions which arrived 3 days later.
The Terms and conditions was an A4 - 8 page document worded exactly like an insurance policy, this gave the AA the means to refuse help or charge me extra for services that were included in my membership in the past.
The list of exclusions was very comprehensive and included their declining help if in the opinion of the mechanic the problem was caused by wear and tear to the vehicle, poor maintenance, a previous repair failing or even failure to get the vehicle to an authorised dealer for a health check and service.
The worst thing that happened to the AA was when greedy people voted to sell it off to a private equity firm in exchange for a cash pay -off, since them it's changed hands many times and each new owner has cut members benefits and concentrated on making money
