I purchased Topaz Photo AI expecting an improvement over the legacy product I already owned, but the experience has been disappointing.
First, it is extremely unclear what the actual difference is between Photo AI and the previous version. In practice, there is little to no added value. The new AI upscaling models do not deliver better results, and in many cases the output is worse. The software tends to “invent” details in a way that looks artificial and unusable. I consistently get better results using Photoshop.
Second, the cloud processing feature is unreliable. Jobs run for several minutes without completing, often forcing me to quit the application. The online processing is not much better.
Finally, the subscription model is misleading. While both monthly and yearly options are presented, I discovered after subscribing that I was effectively locked into a oneyear commitment, with no ability to cancel after the first month. This is some old fashioned marketing that will eventually boomerang back on them.
