Well, i'll start by saying that its not a great app, and if i could give this a one star and the creator of this wretched 'tool' a kick in the face, i would. Im a student in my first year of college who is trying to get decent grades on my essays, but it seems that Turnitin, the system my school uses to 'detect' AI, is quite rigged. I just got an email today by my professor that i was flagged for one of my essays, and i was suprised because i dont recall ever even using AI to write something down. I take my school work pretty seriously and would never even be stupid enough to think about using AI. Anyway, i had to rewrite and resubmit my work, but this didnt go without trying to understand why such a incorrect mistake had occurred. i searched through the conditions in which Turnitin and other AI 'detector' websites commonly use as a rubric and--guess what--its all unreliable. If you have perfect grammar or use a grammar tool, it flags you; if you use common words used by AI, it flags you; If you have no personal writing style, it flags you; if you maintain the same tone eluequently, it flags you. Look how stupid those are. A student can have any one of those aspects and can get flagged for unethical usage. This could ruin a students college life and career life. TURNITIN is a huge problem. In fact, i believe it's a bigger threat than students using AI. If it doesn't guarantee accuracy, why is this website still taken seriously!!!
I submitted my daughter's assignment to her professor. However, the professor emailed her stating that the assignment was in the wrong format and gave her a score of 10/100. I encouraged her to email him and ask for the opportunity to resubmit the assignment in the correct format. Unfortunately, the professor responded by refusing to regrade the assignment or consider a resubmission. A week later, my daughter received a letter from the Dean stating that the professor had reported her for academic violation. He accused her of using AI to write her paper, despite previously stating that the paper was in the wrong format and that he would not regrade it. Additionally, he accused her of plagiarizing, which was my error. It's confusing as to why he reported an assignment that was not intended for grading. I used a website to analyze some writing exercises, including emails from the professor, and most of the incorrect samples, including the professor's email, were flagged with 96% or above AI-generated information. According to the report, my daughter's paper was 55% AI-generated. My daughter uses Grammarly, which is offered by her school. Now I have to take the time to prove that she did not cheat..Dual credit student 17 years old. Honor Roll, academic excellence, national honor society, etc. Thanks to the speech professor at Collin College online.
It is a very unreliable source for the school and teachers to compare with other students' work. This Turnitin system compares words and phrases that are common in everyday language. Also, even take into consideration as plagiarism the title of the assignment and references. I do not know why academic teaching uses it as a reference to look for plagiarism when it is very unreliable.
if i could give this ridiculous thing less than 1 star i would. it is causing me to fail assignments due to "too high a plagiarism percentage" but it literally will highlight RANDOM WORDS AND PHRASES. i've recently done an assignment based on myself how on god's green earth do i get 40% plagiarism?! its ridiculous, untrustworthy, and causing students to fail. it's massively unreliable and COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY USELESS. this stupid thing needs to be gone.
