Where It All Began played an essential role in planning and organizing our recent month-long trip to the Cape region with another couple. We were attracted to WIAB by its stated commitment to sustainable, ethical travel- which they lived up to in practice. Our goals for our trip were somewhat atypical- as avid hikers and botanists, we wanted to focus on exploring the unique floral diversity and natural history of the Western Cape and Namaqualand during the spring wildflower display. Philip worked with us to build a fantastic itinerary based on our initial wish list, tempered and enriched by his deep local knowledge. He also set us up with several outstanding local guides with expertise in the natural history and flora of the areas we visited, together with a wonderful driver/guide who enlightened us about the history, culture, and politics of South Africa while conveying us safely from place to place. Our interactions with these people, and with Philip himself, were a highlight of the trip. WIAB staff also did a great job arranging accommodations and meals and were in touch daily throughout the trip, making adjustments in real time as plans changed due to weather and whims. This was a trip of a lifetime for us- not just because of the stunning landscapes and spectacular biodiversity of the Cape, but also because of the people we met and the things we learned. Many of these extraordinary experiences would not have been possible without Philip and WIAB. We recommend them enthusiastically!
