Thom
Inept & Predatory Business Practice

I am a seller on 1stdibs–hopefully soon no longer–and have experienced firsthand predatory business behavior. Two years ago I emailed my account manager halfway though my annual cycle, and asked to cancel my subscription once it expired on October 28th (sellers are not in control of cancelling accounts themselves). I was told I needed to email him within 1 month of the end of my cycle in order to cancel.--So, I should set an alarm in my calendar to send the exact same email I just sent, but 4 months later? Ok, fine.--Incidentally, I ended up extending my subscription for one more year ($200/month). This year, on July 9th, 2020, I confirmed with my agent (different person) that my subscription would be canceled at the end of the cycle (October 28th, 2020). --Looks like the cancel within 1 month thing isn't a strict policy.--On December 1st, I realized my account had not been canceled, I had been charged for the two subsequent months, and my account manager no longer works for 1stdibs. I called in and spoke with an agent who assured me I would receive an email to cancel my account that same day, and a refund would soon follow. A week later, no email, no refund, I call in and after a few days of not getting through, I was assured the email to cancel my account would come no later than the next day. It is now December 16th, and I have been working for two weeks to simply cancel my account and get refunded the $400, with no updates or resolution in sight. I can't get anyone on the phone anymore, and no one responds to my emails. I now am forced to cancel payments and go through my bank for a refund. After reading similar experiences, it seems this is just their mode of operation. It's embarrassing for a $500 million company to be this inept that they can't even close an account. Beware.
