So we said goodbye to our fur-baby Samhain on Saturday just gone. After weeks of treatment and thousands of dollars, his poor little kidneys gave out and *the* decision had to be made. He passed in my wife's arms, purring his little heart out. We've never not had a fur baby. We have our parrot Leonidas - but you can't cuddle up in bed with a parrot if you value your limbs. My wife said it's like our lives go into a "holding pattern" without something that purrs, and this 100% tracks. It's like we're not a complete family without a little purring heat seeking missile. So we approached Perth Rescue Angels after seeing this beautiful black 18 month old named Minxie. In their defence, we started the process over a long weekend in WA, so we didn't expect a response to our application until Tuesday 4/6/2024. We finally received a response after 6pm asking us to verify that the other pet in the house, a Pomeranian/Chihuahua cross puppy, was desexed, vaccinated and wormed. They asked these questions in the application and I answered, which irked me a bit because it seemed like one of those job interviews where they're standing there with your resume in their hand and then ask you to go over your job history - which they could do by looking at the thing in their hand.We received an answer on the 5th, which was a negative... because we didn't have another cat in the house - or rather because instead of a cat, there's a cat-sized puppy. A 16 week-old, cat-sized puppy. It's like they went over a checklist of things to fail us on:a) Someone home 24 hours/day - can't get them on thatb) Strict cats inside policy unless under supervision - or thatc) History of well-looked-after, long-lived pets - darn it!d) Extremely keen to adopt and standing there doing the Fry from Futurama "Shut up and take my money" meme - there must be somethinge) Another pet in the house to keep her company - AHA! It's a dog! Yes! Everyone calm down, we can reject this one after all! I've seen other people mention they've had similar issues on Reddit; that it feels like they're looking for reasons to not adopt out their babies. Now, while I can super understand wanting to make sure that they go to a good home, it feels like they're actively looking for a reason, any reason to say no - and yet they scream from the rafters that they need homes for their animals desperately. So tomorrow we're going to our local Pet Barn, which has cats from the Perth Cat Haven, to see if any of them decide we'd be a good mum and dad.
