The planning system used to function smoothly 20 years ago, allowing for discussions with a planning officer, but now they mostly work from home, which doesn't help. This council reeks of corruption; if you're favored, your application gets prioritized, otherwise you wait indefinitely. I've seen council-owned properties validated the next day and approved in just a few weeks. With 44 officers on staff, there's no reason for these delays. I'm currently pursuing a cost award for unreasonable behavior, as noted by the government planning inspector. I urge others to file complaints and share their experiences about this underperforming planning authority. The government claims it wants to build more houses and simplify planning processes—what a joke! I suggest these planners be required to work in the office five days a week for eight hours a day to actually get things done, rather than relaxing or watching daytime TV, all at the taxpayer's expense.

I wish I could give negative stars. There's nothing positive to say about this council. They focus solely on profits and accolades while neglecting historic buildings. They drive out local businesses with high rents and poor relations, leaving properties vacant. They ignore serious complaints about a controversial councillor who has faced charges, demonstrating their lack of concern for constituents. They take pride in events like Pride Day but fail to support the actual needs of the LGBT community. Reporting issues like fly-tipping yields no action; I've had to clean up myself. These are just a few examples of their ongoing failures as a council. They're utterly ineffective.
How many times must I reach out to the council to get electoral registration forms mailed to me? I can't convert a PDF to a Word document, and I won't pay just for that. I lack a printer and shouldn't have to go to a library, wait for a computer, and pay to print forms for both myself and my partner. The cost is irrelevant. Then I have to mail the forms and hope they arrive at the right destination. Do they not know how to handle hard copies?
This review pertains to the recycling crew in the local area. Every two weeks, these individuals work incredibly hard, maintaining a positive attitude despite dealing with messy situations. While the high council tax is frustrating, this team consistently goes the extra mile and deserves recognition from the council.
No stars would be more fitting! The city is now a deteriorating mess, once better maintained even by the Romans. Historical sites are falling apart, areas are closed off for safety due to neglect, bins overflow, and sidewalks are cracked and uneven. The lack of accessible restrooms contributes to unpleasant odors, and there are always beggars in shop doorways. The city caters more to cars than pedestrians, with heavy traffic everywhere. After living here for nearly 30 years, it's disheartening to witness this decline. I wouldn't recommend it as a tourist destination in its current state.
