After trying it seriously, I'm genuinely surprised by how highly it's rated on the official site and app stores. My experience has been mostly frustrating, and it feels like the app prioritizes keeping you hooked over actually teaching you a language effectively.
Right from the start, it throws you into lessons where you're basically guessing words instead of properly teaching them. There's little to no clear explanation of vocabulary, grammar rules, or why things work the way they do. You see a word or phrase a few times in context (or out of it), get it wrong, and then it's "oh well, try again", but you still don't really learn it properly. It relies way too much on pattern recognition and multiple-choice guessing rather than building a solid foundation. I felt like I was playing a game of elimination more than learning anything useful.
The interface and overall design feel aimed at kindergarten kids rather than general adult users (or even teens). The colorful cartoons, constant animations, exaggerated sound effects, and over-the-top encouragement come across as childish and patronizing. It seems built more for short dopamine hits than meaningful progress.
The heavy focus on gamification (streaks, leagues, hearts/energy system, gems, etc.) is clearly designed to boost engagement metrics and keep people coming back daily, but at the expense of effective learning. Lessons become extremely repetitive after a while: the same sentence structures recycled endlessly, tiny variations, and busywork that doesn't build real fluency. It gets boring and frustrating fast, especially when you're penalized for mistakes in ways that feel punitive rather than educational.
Overall, it's poorly designed for anyone who wants more than superficial "tourist random phrases." If your goal is actual language acquisition (speaking, understanding, writing), this app falls short and wastes a lot of time. I'm not surprised so many people drop off after the initial novelty wears off.
If you're serious about learning a language, I'd look elsewhere (textbooks, other apps with better explanations, or real practice). Duolingo might be fun for a casual five minutes a day, but don't expect real results.

Duolingo Feels Like Kindergarten Busywork for Adults.

I love learning a new language on the go, from anywhere, as it builds a sense of consistency which is key in learning the language. Duolingo has a streak feature which helps one in maintaining consistency. The down side to this is the emails you keep getting from them. They overload your inbox with emails, I understand the core reason for this feature but it doesn't have to be this aggressive.
Why cant that fat green bird just leave me alone. In the end I had to delete the app losing all hope, because I had a green bird simping for me when I'm just trying to live my life. Duo needs to resign. He's getting in my head and affecting my mental health by guilt tripping me into doing my duolingo. I'm not happy. Someone give Duo the sack. He's so aggressive like mate just have a day off.
The new energy system is an absolute disaster, especially for Legendary lessons. I started my lesson with 25 energy, got to 80% done, hit zero, and Duo didn't give a single bonus energy drop—not one. My progress was completely halted, forcing me to either fork out 450 gems or pay for a subscription to finish a lesson I'd already mostly completed. This isn't a game mechanic; it's a cynical cash grab that ruins the learning experience for free users. It’s a bug that needs fixing, but more importantly, this entire predatory system needs to be removed.
It’s really poor.
It’s designed to make you buy the expensive version - I can’t get through some of the units even on 24/25 “energy” so you lose the progress. The speaking part doesn’t understand me half the time, marking me wrong even if I know I’ve said things correctly.
The vocabulary progression is bizarre and doesn’t prepare you for real life conversations.
It’s based on American English which is really confusing (with horrific grammar!) and it marks me wrong if I translate something into English. One of the languages I tried was Spanish, in which I am reasonably proficient, but it gave different words for things and refused to accept some words which I know are correct (learned in Spain!) so I’m assuming it’s South American Spanish. It doesn’t tell you this though!
Duolingo accused me of cheating during a test, claiming I used another app, without providing any proof. I was treated like a liar and given no fair chance to challenge the accusation.
As a result, my test was invalidated and I missed a university application deadline, which had serious consequences for my academic plans. For a service used in university admissions, this lack of transparency and fairness is unacceptable. I do not recommend this platform
This is neither an effective learning app nor a proper game, despite claims of gamification. A learning app should teach you something, while a game should provide entertainment, but this falls short in both areas. I've dedicated a lot of time to language learning, but the course constantly changes, and not for the better, before you can reach completion. Recently, they introduced chess, which has been incredibly frustrating. Lessons lack clear guidance on what to do, with new boards appearing each time, forcing you to seek out every opportunity. If you finally grasp a lesson and want to test it in a regular match, you encounter Oscar, the most irritating opponent imaginable. He provides unhelpful commentary with every move, claiming to practice a gracious demeanor, yet there's nothing gracious about him. He mocks your every action, and if you get close to winning, he either prolongs the game with pointless checks or forces a stalemate. Winning is rare, and if you do succeed, you need a higher rating for the next match. You're constantly strategizing against a supercomputer that anticipates 600,000 moves ahead. Additionally, the user interface is frustratingly slow; instead of a quick button to start a match, it processes a service call first, leaving you unsure if your button press registered. By the time it finally loads, you've already made several moves from repeatedly tapping. It's clear they don't use their own app, or they would understand why so many paying users are leaving.
There are numerous advantages, but also a few limitations. It frequently overlooks the necessary vocabulary and skills essential for mastering the language. Additionally, it tends to emphasize minor issues like spelling mistakes, which are often the least important aspects of language learning. When these issues arise, I find myself quitting after just one lesson due to frustration.
I began learning German with enthusiasm, but things took a turn when the platform opted for AI over traditional methods. This choice led to noticeable issues with sentence structure and word usage. Additionally, the robotic pronunciation made learning harder. I tried to upgrade to a premium package, but this resulted in losing my long-standing account. When I sought recovery, I encountered a server error that prevented access to the recovery page. I had to create a new account, and I’ve decided against paying for the platform's services, especially since their only communication option is email, which is quite frustrating.
There are countless reasons this app warrants a one-star rating, but the latest issue is sheer dishonesty. The service is currently promoting a "60% off" Super subscription, which initially excited me, only to find out it’s really just a 40% discount. While 40% off is still a fair offer, presenting it as 60% is misleading and disrespectful. We are not naive enough to miscalculate. This app was once excellent, but it has been ruined by AI, unbearable ads after each lesson, and a ridiculous energy system designed solely to extract money from users. The only reason I continue using this service is my hope that someone will rectify this situation and bring the app back to its former excellence.
