My recent visit to a hearing and brain center reminded me why obtaining hearing aids over 20 years ago was one of the best choices I've ever made. Prior to this, I had hearing aids from a large retail outlet that merely amplified noise instead of assisting me in hearing the specific sounds I struggled with. Once I switched and had my hearing aids customized to my exact needs, everything improved. My new hearing aids allow me to hear the letters and sounds I was missing, and I can easily switch between settings like “focus forward” for dining out and a “hear all” mode for daily activities. As a teacher in a gym with young children, I especially appreciate how they automatically soften loud, high-pitched sounds to protect my ears. Before using hearing aids, I avoided socializing and conversing because I couldn’t understand others and felt embarrassed constantly asking them to repeat themselves. Now, I feel confident once again. I also value that the center conducts tests for cognitive decline. With a family history of Alzheimer’s and a mother currently in memory care, this provides me with tremendous peace of mind.
