I was delighted to receive an invitation from my Campus NSLS Chapter Advisor inviting me to join. The first local interaction through the induction process was seamless. I appreciate the connections and support on both the campus chapter level as well as the national level. If you dedicate your time to NSLS you will get so much in return. Thank you, NSLS!

How the NSLS Helped Me Step Out of My Comfort Zone

My experience in the NSLS has been one of the most important parts of my growth at CSN. When I first joined, I struggled with shyness and had a hard time talking to people, but the NSLS helped me step out of my comfort zone. Through the leadership trainings and success networking team meetings, I created real goals for myself—like greeting 20 people in two weeks and continuing to talk to at least 7 new people every week. I actually accomplished those goals, and they helped me become more confident in school, at work, and in everyday life.Being part of the NSLS also taught me how to stay consistent and hold myself accountable. I’ve kept up with my goals, such as walking every day at the same time and challenging myself to communicate better with classmates, professors, and new people I meet at events. The program has pushed me to be more organized, more disciplined, and more focused on my long-term dream of becoming a lawyer. The NSLS has also connected me with other student leaders who motivate me to keep improving. Hearing their stories and sharing my own has helped me see that leadership isn’t about being perfect—it’s about learning, growing, and being willing to take the first step.Overall, the NSLS has helped me do things I never thought I could do—like volunteering at St. Jude’s Ranch for Children and attending events such as the Asian Lantern Festival. It pushed me to get involved, meet new people, and step into opportunities I never would have imagined for myself.

This experience has been a fantastic building block for my confidence in my leadership skills and capabilities. I enjoyed the many different guest speakers I was able to watch, and I also learned great tactics for future use. Being able to organize and push forward is a great tool to have on hand, and the advice and knowledge I gained in this program is second to none.

First Impressions set a baseline. Let set it higher!

The concept, the intention, and the structured coursework are great; however, the implementation and the leadership of the individual chapter is lacking. I had high expectations of a structured environment, when attending the meetings, that would provide personal testimonies and leadership for the journey. The meeting was unstructured with bare-minimum information about NSLS, the purpose, the benefits and overall, why it is important beyond recognition at graduation. Perhaps, being a older non-traditional student my optics and expectations are different. That being said, I may be the only doctoral student who signed up therefore, would like to encourage separate meetings and orientation for doctoral students who may be at a different stage in life.

Excellent Service

I have been able to serve on the Chapter Executive Board, so in addition to advancing my own leadership skills, I am able to help others advance theirs as well.

My experience

I liked the networking and videos on leadership. I didn't like the hours the schedule meetings because it interfered with classes. Also didn't like writing about what we learned from the speaker.

It been so great especially meeting new people and learning more about how to become a leader. I am facing my fears of talking to a big crowd.
