Quite possibly the worst fresh cod portion that I've ever received from a traditional Irish-Italian chipper ... and considering that I've had fresh cod every couple of months for the last 25 years, that's saying something!! I know the price of cod has increased significantly in recent years, but the amount of actual fish inside the disgusting, dark-brown, oil-soaked batter was pathetic - I'd have been better off buying some frozen Donegal Catch cod fillets in Tesco and waiting the extra half-hour. And I can't overstate how bad the batter was - it was inedible - and I was starving! If chippers are going to cut back on the quantity of fish that they serve, then they really need to revise the quality of the batter that they serve it in. Thankfully, the battered sausage that I had also ordered was decent enough to enjoy, because the chips were also a huge disappointment ... far too many "bits" of short, stubby, over-fried "chiplets" for my liking - and most of them were very greasy ... there was only about a dozen good-sized chips which were in good condition, honestly. My previous experience of the food in Romayos, Clonsilla wasn't great - which is why I haven't ordered from them in months ....but I've definitely learned my lesson from this experience ... there's much nicer take-away food to be bought for €15 in the local area ... but if the draw of a "fish & chip" supper becomes too great to ignore (as it did for me last night!), then maybe try a different location because I suspect that they're not changing-out the oil as often as they should be in Romayos, Clonsilla.
