We decided to try breakfast at Toby Carvery Braintree after it was recommended to us by a member of staff when we visited for dinner previously.
Unfortunately the experience was very disappointing. When we arrived we were simply told to sit anywhere and weren’t given any cutlery. After sitting down we had to ask for cutlery ourselves, and the staff member who responded was quite rude.
The food itself was poor and not particularly enjoyable. We also ordered two coffees which never arrived. It later became clear they had been made but were simply forgotten and never brought to the table.
The restaurant wasn’t particularly busy, so the level of service was surprising.
Overall it was a very poor experience and sadly it will be our first and last time visiting Toby Carvery for breakfast.
We went for Toby in Romford today. I had a King Size. At first the Chef was missing but he finally appeared looking so unhappy and was never going to smile. I was only given one sausage and asked for Turkey and was given 3 slices and then asked if I could try a small slice of well done beef. The chef proceeded to take a slice of Turkey from my plate and placed it back on the Turkey to give to another customer which I thought was not too hygienic seeing it had been on my plate. He then gave me the smallest amount of beef possible.
I did mention this to the manager when he paid my bill and he did say the chef should not had done that. I just laughed and walked out. I think they needed to keep the meat more than I wanted to eat it. The vegetables and potatoes were ok. I would never go back after this type of service.
I had placed an order for my holiday dinner ahead of time and received confirmation along with a delivery window, only for them to cancel it right as the delivery time was approaching. This is a very poor way to treat customers. There was no explanation, no apology, and no effort to rectify the situation. It's quite disheartening to see such behavior, and I feel sad for those who might have relied on this meal as the highlight of their holiday. While I will manage, there are others who might be struggling with this kind of disappointment.
Honestly, I’m not sure if it’s worth my time to write this considering the other reviews, but the Newton Abbot branch has failed my delivery booking three times in a row. The first time, the order was cold and incomplete. On the next attempt, I used click and collect, which is only five minutes away, but half of it was missing. My last-ditch effort was to book a Boxing Day dinner, only to receive a call two hours before saying the website shouldn’t have allowed it. When I offered to arrive early, they informed me there was hardly any food left. What a frustrating experience.
We chose to have our Christmas lunch at a local venue for the first time yesterday and were thoroughly impressed! Even with the busy crowd, the additional staff ensured everything flowed smoothly. Drinks and starters arrived at our table just minutes after we were seated, and they quickly cleared our plates when we finished. We were invited to the carvery when ready, which had an excellent selection of meats and vegetables. Although they ran out of mashed potatoes while we waited, it was promptly restocked. The dessert was delightful and arrived shortly after our main course. The staff was friendly and genuinely seemed to care, which was refreshing to see on Christmas Day. As regular visitors, we found the food to be exceptional this time. The attentiveness of the staff, especially one who helped an elderly lady carry her food, was heartwarming. Overall, our family decided we will return for Christmas again next year, as we couldn’t have wished for anything better. Kudos to the team!
Myself and four family members enjoyed Christmas dinner at a local venue yesterday. Having visited before but never during the holiday season, we were aware of the standards to expect, yet it surpassed our expectations. Despite the busy environment, our waiter, who was managing multiple tables, was lovely and very efficient. We relished the food, which offered a great variety of meats and vegetables. The carvery setup is perfect for those who are particular about their food choices. We enjoyed three courses and received a lovely handwritten Christmas card with our names, which was a thoughtful gesture. We all agreed to come back next Christmas.
I attended the Christmas Day dinner on December 25, 2025. The atmosphere was fantastic with many little touches that made a significant difference. The staff was excellent, and the food was tasty. The only minor issue was that the lamb wasn’t ready for our initial sitting, but there were five other meats available.
