I signed up using a promo in 10/2023. My kids have logins but it wasn't clear that I had a login because I was never able to login myself using the email I used to create the account. I was automatically billed a renewal. The bill has contact information where the listed phone # points to a personal phone # where the voicemail says if you're trying to reach tykner, this is the wrong #. Tynkers forum pages do not load where people ask questions about canceling account and getting refunds. I still have not received an email response regarding cancel and refund. Do not sign up for this service as it is one of those subscription based services where support is non-existent.
The approach and content appears to be good, less "dry" than some learning platforms for coding. However, be aware, their payment system for subscriptions is tricky. I had been led to believe that I was "upsold" a yearly membership where, for about $70 more, I could upgrade it to a lifetime status. Instead, I was charged twice. Once for the yearly subscription, then for almost an additional $200, I was charged again, for the lifetime membership. Please be careful, each option has it's own charge. Had the system been more clear, I would have given it three stars, but, because of the deceptive nature of billing, I am rating it at one.
I've been trying different coding apps for my kid and thought Tynker would be a good option to start with. Technically it may be a good option if you pay right away, but I wanted to try the free tier first to see if this is a good fit. Long story short - bait and switch!Apparently, Tynker was acquired by Byju's couple years ago, and Byju's is the owner of the infamous WhiteHat Jr who used sketchiest sales tactics ever... so I'm not surprised that these tactics now been applied to their acquisition... sad.
First, they coax you into downloading their app, insisting on a full registration. Only after you've gone through the hassle of making a full registering do they drop the bomb: the supposedly 'free' app actually demands a $10/month subscription, with no free tier. Congratulations, you've just wasted my time. I promptly deleted the app, but the frustration doesn’t end there. Now, my inbox is flooded with incessant spam emails, disguised as urgent messages like 'Your Child Needs Your Approval.' Tynker's strategy is clear: reel people in with deception and then bombard them afterward. Their moral compass is seriously askew.
