I am a listener who was banned for not giving advice! Short version of the story ... I'd been with cups for 5 years and done all the training there and got lots of nice reviews. Chatting there has changed, however, with our clientele being more disturbed and more in need of psychiatric support than just a chat with untrained listener.

Cups is always telling us how helpful it is to listeners who want to learn more, so I contacted a mentor to discuss the different members with more difficult issues. I was not given any guidance, but instead ended (naively) up in a mock chat to see how I was doing with empathy. The chat was about bullying by a boss at work. The mentor seemed to think that I, as a listener, should be suggesting the pretend member should talk to someone, and also suggesting / advising who this might be! In my country (the UK) that would be giving employment advice without training, and the only people you should talk to are HR (if it wouldn't make the situation worse) or a Union rep if it was that serious. I said this to the mentor, but they didn't hear me, and told me to then carry on treating it as a bullying at work situation. That is still needing proper employment advice and support, and I pointed that out as well. A couple of days later I found I was banned for thee months -- something to do with not interacting with a mentor, and my side of the story was not listened to when I sent in a request to be heard.

Considering 7 Cups is a worldwide listening service, this worryingly all feels like promoting bad practice. There are lovely listeners who work very hard as volunteers, but if you have a serious issue (beyond a bit of self-esteem awareness or breaking up with your bf) you should try a service nearer to home where there is proper, professional training given. ChatGPT might work as well; it is very empathetic, and can give you ideas of places to look for help too.

Makes your mental health worse

I paid for therapy because I was struggling with something, dumped my personal problem onto therapist which was hard to do, and the therapist ignored my message for days other than an automated message. Now, the support has been ignoring me for an entire business week.

I had thought naively, that 7 cups was non-judgemental and didn't give advice, I was wrong!

I signed up on Nov 19

I signed up on Nov 19, 2025 and requested to cancel and receive a full refund on Nov 25, 2025. I never used the paid service (zero sessions / zero usage). Instead of simply cancelling and refunding, I was sent a retention-style response and on Dec 2, 2025 they offered a partial refund ($60) rather than the full amount. Now, over a month later, this still hasn’t been resolved — and they’ve even attempted to charge me again. I received a bank alert showing a second charge attempt of $219.48 from 7CUPS.COM, which was declined. This happened after I’d already been trying to get the account cancelled/refunded, and I’ve since deactivated my account, so I can’t even manage anything on my end. This is unacceptable. I asked for a straightforward cancellation + full refund and got delays, partial offers, and continued billing attempts. If you value your time and don’t want to fight for weeks to stop charges and get your money back, avoid.

My Experience

An excellent website if you’re looking to be ignored, ghosted, or left on read. The listeners here don’t seem to care, even when members are opening up about serious struggles and being pushed toward calling 988 or a local warm line instead of receiving actual support. Honestly, I wouldn’t trust this platform with anyone’s wellbeing. You can share something vulnerable, like addiction or other personal challenges, and the listeners will leave you hanging as if you don’t matter at all. I strongly do not recommend this site. Its decline is rooted in the behavior and indifference of the listeners themselves.

The company charged me in full for a month, without an option for weekly payments. The therapist did not respond to me for six days. The app would not update or allow me to join sub groups. I reported the technical issue without any response. I asked for a refund after not getting the help I was so desperately seeking. They did not respond to my request again after I declined a discount and new therapist.

Very little support for Listeners who are dealing with members with severe psychiatric issues

I (was) a long term listener with 7 cups who did all the training to get their certificates, had over 250 positive reviews, and volunteered in other admin and support roles within the platform. I had two chats I had severe concerns about, and both with people diagnosed mental illness they alerted me to. Both were also very abusive, and one was even convinced I was the friend who had raped and was now on 7 Cups, stalking her across the platform. Listeners on 7 Cups are supposed to have mods and admins to handle these things, but before I could ask for support, I found I couldn't access my account. I am presuming I was banned because of reports sent in by the members I was chatting with, but I am not even sure of that. A month later I had not received any communication about what happened, despite contacting the Admin team, and being told I had to wait 7-10 days to hear. After many days' reflection / feeling hurt, upset, AND somewhat used, I realised I’d been given a wake-up call. 7 Cups only really exists to promote their paid for therapists. The 'free' side of things are the listeners who are volunteers with little training, hardly any back -up and have to expect to chat with literally anyone. I am as open-minded as the next person, and thought my many years as a teacher might be helpful in dealing with chats, but this is not true Often chats I have taken part in have been disturbing, and having someone say they are there masturbating while you chat to them is pretty creepy. I have chatted people in trauma, chatted with someone needing to take their anger out on someone (I was standing in for whoever they are angry with), chats who swear at you if you talk common sense, and chats who come back with new accounts, even if you block them, and continually threaten with violence and death. If a member doesn't like a chat, or is just feeling the need to be vindictive, they can report you for any reason they can think of. The admins will then ban you, saying it is important to listen no matter what and be ‘kind’ even if we are abused. We then have to prove we didn't do anything wrong -- it's guilty until proven innocent. During my time on 7 Cups, have also seen how the fast listener turnover is. Most volunteers don't hang around either when they realise what is happening, or when they get weirded out, which is often. In conclusion, 7 cups are using listeners to provide a free service, and then blames them for wrong doing although being given proper support. EDIT - a month after the ban I received an automated response about giving off site contact details, and it would be a permanent ban if I did this again. I feel I have been victimised here, and have sent a sternly worded response to the support team and will, again, report back here if I get a response. In a real life situation, I would of course have contacted Human Resources, brought in my union, hired a lawyer AND taken them 7 Cups to an employment tribunal by now.

It's a scam

It's a scam. You pay 159$ to message a fake therapist that responds maybe once every 24-48 hours or to talk to unprofessional "listeners".That's a lot of money for nothing. The 14 day refund policy is also fake. They will not give you any money back. I already contacted the customer service ,they offered 60$ back even though I cancelled this no sense membership and didn't want to use it.Contacting the customer support doesn't lead to a solution. When I logged into the account to get more information I realised that even though I paid 159$ I couldn't even login to my account after only 2 weeks!!!Stay away from this and never pay for it!! It's like throwing money in the garbage.Stay away from this scammer website. This website should be shut down! Before 7cups gives me any standart response, I have contacted your "customer support" multiple times and they still don't want to give me my money back. I provided ALL necessary informations.

It’s disgusting how the “listeners”…

It’s disgusting how the “listeners” treat you. I think this app is dangerous: it only made me feel worse. It made me feel unseen, fooled and more lonely than before.

I had the weirdest experience

I had the weirdest experience, we were all sharing and out of nowhere this girl sally came and scolded us, that we must follow the rules, that we should only talk 7minutes, and we were all like but we werent even talking for 7minutes as yet, and she got me banned from the 7cups registration after I called her out on it and then got rude.
