Review Time
Everything was quick and easy. Nico answered quite quickly to all our questions and doubts. I was a bit scared of using an intermediary in order to secure our tickets in advance, but our tickets were waiting for us at the hotel as we asked when we arrived!
I found navigating the JR site to try to secure tickets for the sunrise express daunting. I was happy to pay a service to secure tickets on my behalf. I was optimistic that it would work out. The owner was local, responsive and wrote thoughtful and clear answers to my questions. I asked them to move forward to secure tickets for me and was thrilled to get the note back that my tickets had been secured. All systems go! But here is where the trouble started. The owner told me on March 25th that they had managed to get me tickets. I had to write back three time, on the 25th, the 27th and the 31st to inquire about payment and deliver before I got a reply. Here is their reply on the 31st of March: Apologies for the belated response -- I have been traveling. It won't happen again. We can confirm that we have prepared a Single Twin (Second Class) room for you, as well as two basic fare tickets. Regarding delivery, we offer three main options. The first is delivery by mail to your residence. In this case, we request the payment be made via bank transfer. The second is delivery by mail to a hotel you will be staying at while you're in Japan. In this case as well, we request payment by bank transfer. The third option is in-person delivery within the Tokyo area. In this case, we can meet you at your hotel, and the payment can take place with cash. The fact the owner went AWOL for a week gave me pause. Then I found the negative review on TrustPilot and thought that I better make sure that they have the tickets and that the tickets will come to me if I send the money. On April 1st I asked that the owner send me a picture of the tickets and I got this reply almost immediately: “I’m currently on vacation and away from Tokyo, and will return on April 6th. Would it be okay if I sent you the photo afterward?” Is it possible that the owner was on vacation and didn’t have access to an electronic copy? Perhaps, but not likely. Let me just add, I did not get a photo of the tickets on the 6th or any day thereafter. Given the one-week disappearing act and the inability to produce an image of the tickets, I decided that I better pick up the tickets in-person rather than rely on this owner, whose company has no public address, to mail it to my hotel in Tokyo. I wrote a second time on April 1st telling the owner that I was selecting option 3: in-person delivery within the Tokyo area. I proposed we meet at 9:15 am at the Tokyo train station on April 21st to make the exchange. Six days later, on April 6th, I got the following reply: Apologies for the delayed response. Yes, 9:15 works perfectly. Please note that since we haven’t yet received a financial commitment from you, we may need to prioritize another customer if they request and pay for the same tickets before you do. Let’s skip the fact that the owner disappeared again for almost a week and focus on the substance. I had agreed to pay them according to their terms of service-in person delivery and then they had changed the rules because they felt the exchange date (21st) and the travel date (27th) were to close together. I understand the risk that the owner is taking by securing tickets before securing the payment but changing your own payment and delivery terms in the middle of a transaction is bad business. At this point, I gave up. I hadn’t seen evidence of the tickets and the owner wasn’t sticking to the payment and deliver terms that they had presented to me. I wrote a negative review on this site. The following day, April 7th I received 5 separate emails from the owner and in the last one, the owner came forward with new option for me to get the tickets. Under the new proposal I was to make a deposit via wire transfer to them of $75 to secure the tickets and we would stick with the original in-person delivery date, time and location. The owner also asked that I remove my negative review and I obliged. Armed with the owners name and banking information I tried to wire $75 to them. My bank, like 95% of banks in the US, according to ChatGPT, requires the recipients full address. I wrote to the owner to ask for their address and I got no answer. That was on April 8th. On April 9th I wrote again and still crickets. They have gone silent again. At the end of the day, this just isn’t a reliable service. You might get the tickets (if you want to believe the other reviews that were posted between the time I took down my first negative review and before I posted this replacement negative review.) Or you might not. Three times the owner disappeared and two times the owner failed to come through on their proposed payment terms. What can I say, I didn’t lose any money but I missed out on the opportunity to secure tickets. Addendum: I will add that my trip to Japan was incredible. Everything went swimmingly. Everyone I met was kind and reliable. This owner is the exception to the rule.
SCAM. This review is for Sunriseexpresstickets.com not Sunrise Express whonare the official and reputable train operator. But this company offer to provide a buying service for the Sunrise Express, the last remaining night train in Japan. Its virtually impossible to obtain tickets outside of Japan. This company offer to purchase the ticket on your behalf. They don't ask for money upfront so I had nothing to lose. They confirmed a reservation and requested payment by bank transfer or cash in person in Tokyo. That then set alarm bells ringing. So I checked online. They have no contact details on their site and no social media footprint. The name of the person emailing you back does not exist on any social media site and they have no reviews online. I replied and said that for my safety I would meet them at a place of my choice which they say they will do, so I said I would meet them at the train company information desk at Tokyo Station where I would ask a rep to confirm my reservation made by the company at which point I would transfer the money. Surprise surprise, I never heard from them again! In response to their reply, I messaged on two platforms asking for confirmation of the request to collect the tickets in person like they offer, at a JR counter and I had no response. As for me turning down a Zoom call, a complete lie! All interaction on their part stopped when I requested an in person collection. I'll leave people to make up their own mind; would you pay by the least secure means of payment possible, with no way of recouping the money, to a company with no contact details on their website and no social media footprint and no reviews on line, for a product you cant physically see, who won't meet you in person to verify tickets.... good luck with that one if you do! And I did not demand a ticket before payment. This company say they will meet you in person in Tokyo and you can pay them cash. I said I'll meet you at a JR desk then, and they can confirm the ticket, and I'll pay you cash. I didn't demand the goods before any payment was made. In reply to their latest reply, they offered to meet me in Tokyo. When I said OK, at a JR counter, silence! Never heard again. Like I said, read my review and if you're happy paying a company with an insecure payment method, who have no contact details etc, then crack on and good luck! 😆 Funny how there are two very similar bad reviews, the first the company has, then 7 5 star reviews in the month or so after! Hmm.
Very professional and communicative seller!I used their services to get tickets for the Sunrise Express which was a dream of mine. They helped enormously, making an otherwise seemingly impossible booking super easy! They were very communicative, reassuring and generous with their time.Payment was extremely easy and tickets were sent to our hotel in Japan with great care and speed.I couldn't recommend these guys enough - their help during an extremely busy season (Late dec/ New Years) is so greatly appreciated and made our trip! Thanks again!
The process of purchasing (email communication), payment (bank transfer) and subsequent collection (in-person at my hotel) went very smoothly. I recommend providing a couple of date options and accommodating your itinerary around those dates. I have ridden the Sunrise Express twice, once via this service, and would not hesitate to repurchase from this service. So much easier for me, compared to the first time when I camped on the JR website for several days at 9am JST and clicking like mad through a less-than-intuitive online order form. Save yourself the headache and guesswork!
I had a good experience with Sunrise Express Tickets. While I initially shared similar concerns to the other reviews with the lack of business reviews or social media for this Company, it was recommended to me by a user on Reddit. Trusting them, I reached out as I had a bit of a complicated request for the sunrise express tickets I wanted booked (a combination of tickets with different room types). To be clear, they are not from JR railways or related to the operation of the Sunrise Express trains. But they do facilitate acquiring tickets for the train, given the cumbersome purchasing process. While I wasn't able to get exactly the specific rooms I wanted due to the limited availability and booking process, Sunrise Express Tickets were willing to work with me to get tickets that satisfied my needs overall. I got shower cards for my full group, they gave me a group order discount, and also they gave me a discount for a smoke deodorizer since I got a smoking room due to limited availability. They mailed my tickets to the hotel I was going to be staying at in Japan in advance of my arrival, so I was able to pick them up immediately when I arrived. They also shared shipping information with me so I could track and see when it was expected to arrive at my hotel. As for the credit card comments in other reviews, I found that using a credit card while on some money exchange sites gave me enough comfort when paying for this service. I used Xe money transfer and the additional credit card fee was worth my peace of mind. This way I could still deposit into this company's bank account. If i would give any constructive feedback, it would be to launch some sort of payment portal so people can use credit cards directly.
Nico/Sunrise did his best to get us tickets during a particularly busy time. My wife and I were looking for something very specific, but he was only able to secure one ticket in the berth we wanted initially. At the same time because he could only get 1 he was very adaptive, suggesting alternatives so we could both take the train together, and updating us as he'd check in regularly on availability. Very happy with the service.
