The self made brushes exercise really got me to think outside the box. The experience of using the brushes took me back to about age 4. Didn't think about anything except the brushes and the marks they were making. The No Fear Sketchbook- really felt what it is like to paint with no fear. Hope I can take this feeling from mark-making to painting in general. I liked the taste of freedom.
Pam brings a very organised and in depth approach to these classes and shares lots of ideas to help get you started. Since the class I have continued on my journey of looking out for and collecting examples of line and texture that I may use in the future. I really notice I have more tools at my fingertips now with which to resolve my paintings.
It is so easy to find your place in this program. The website works wonderfully for keeping track of the lessons you have completed and what you might have skipped. Right now, although we are starting a new year going through the program, I am going back to the point last year where I lost focus. I can make up or catch up at my own pace.
My second year in ASM has really ramped up my learning, it’s a process, a journey of discovering more and more of my personal voice and having the ability to use the design principles to problem solve and interpret what I am seeing and feeling on the surface. Pam is an extraordinary teacher and her admin team backs her up and enhances the learning experience!
As I progress into my second year of the ASM Pro course I wanted to share my experiences and the positive impact ASM continues to have on my growth as an artist.Revisiting the course content has proven immensely beneficial. It has not only reinforced my understanding of design basics and color theory but also deepened my appreciation for the importance of continuously engaging with these fundamental principles. Each session provides new insights and strengthens the skills I am working to develop.I particularly enjoy participating in the large group ZAP sessions. Despite their length, these sessions are incredibly valuable. They offer a workshop-like environment that is both inspiring and informative. Hearing about the techniques, supplies, and tools others are using broadens my perspective and introduces me to possibilities I may not have considered independently. The diversity in artistic voices present in the ZAP sessions is especially enlightening. As someone who is still in the process of finding my unique artistic voice, these sessions are instrumental. They expose me to various styles and approaches to painting, prompting me to explore what resonates with me and what does not.The Admin-led discussions, too, are a significant source of inspiration and learning, particularly in understanding other artists' methods and approaches. This focused analysis is incredibly helpful as it encourages me to reflect deeply on how I might similarly use or adapt these elements in my own artistic endeavors. For instance, this month's focus on Line and Marks was particularly enlightening. I recognize my preference for both structured, solid subjects and free-spirited mark-making. Previously, I felt conflicted trying to choose one approach over the other, but the discussion opened my eyes to the possibility of harmoniously integrating both styles in my work. Understanding that it doesn’t have to be an 'either/or' decision has been liberating. It allows for a more expansive expression of my artistic voice, and I am excited to explore this blend in my future projects. This course, with its rich variety of learning formats and opportunities to interact with fellow artists, plays a crucial role in my artistic journey. It encourages me to reflect critically on my preferences in art and nurtures my development in a supportive and engaging community.Thank you Pam and Admins for your guidance and for facilitating such a dynamic and enriching learning environment.
This is course is not a how to draw or paint class. It's about understanding the elements that make up art and your reaction to them. It doesn't matter what medium or style of artist you are. You will be a better artist than you were before you started.
I have just completed Master Class 6 and am about mid-way through the one-year course. I went into this course hoping to "find my voice" as an artist and I have been surprised to discover my love for marks/line, color, and shape! I am turning 70 this month and sometimes you think you know yourself and nothing will surprise you. So you can imagine my surprise when I had ah-ha moments! How did I not already know this about myself? Already I can see how these newfound discoveries can and will influence my work. Now over the next 6 months I will have the challenge and pleasure of doing just that. Thank you Pam! You are a talented artist and teacher.
