I accidentally, forgot my credit card at home. They refused to accept credit/debit card. Also, they wouldnt accept my virtual credit card. Its fair that it says that they only accept credit cards and physical one. I was then forced to buy insurance with them so that i can rent the car. the price of their insurance was as much as the price for renting the car for 5 days. They pciked us at airport after a long time, we had to wait atleast 45 mins. Overall, i am not so happy with them and won't rent from Klasswagon if i have other options.
The staff member present on pick up was aggressive and tried to scare me into purchasing €200 insurance for the week telling me my Booking.com insurance was only protection. Not sure what that meant but the Booking.com insurance would repay any charges made by Klasswagen - which was fine by me. The car had lots of scratches and 55000 km on the clock. Having said that it was a great little runabout and I took photos of all the scratches. The return experience was brilliant, quick and efficient, everything explained and pleasant, helpful and friendly staff. Easy shuttle trip to the airport. Booking reference 647395333
If you don't take their insurance, which makes the rental 10 X the price, you're screwed. They ask a deposit of €2500, and charge you €440 for scratch 21 which was not included in the 20 scratches already on the form...When you don't agree, they even don't answer your mails, but keep the whole deposit.
On my recent trip to Portugal, I booked a hire car with Klass Wagen via Last Minute, I also took out the additional insurance with Last Minute. Upon arrival, Klass Wagen wouldn't accept my card for the deposit as it wasn't a Visa or Master Card, I showed the representative that the car was in fact a Visa at which point he changed his reason to the name on the card being S P TAYLOR and not MR S TAYLOR. The only way he would let me take a car was to take out their insurance at £152 (for which, miraculously my credit card was now fine to be used). In addition, he would not let me check out the car as the weather was bad and they were in a rush to get people off of the forecourt. Upon leaving the depot, the windscreen wipers were sub optimum, resulting in poor visibility, after a few miles, the service indicator also came on.
This company uses pressure tactics and questionable damage charges as part of a routine scam to make money. They'll lure you in with low rental costs and then proceed to either aggressively upsell, or set you up with a scratched vehicle that's poorly documented to then scam money out of you to fix. They demonstrably do not use this damage fees to fix the cars, as they're all so horribly scratched and dented. This follows the same pattern I now see in many other reviews - it's a routine and well practiced scam. On arrival, they refused to accept my credit card because the name showed an initial (even though it matched my ID and bank app), asked for bank statements, and pushed hard to sell extra insurance. This is a classic first scam move, fluster the customer so they are more agreeable and just accept anything so they don't run the risk of losing the rental and being abandoned without a car. When I declined, I was suddenly given an “upgrade” to a larger vehicle, with the claim that “Portuguese law” requires them to give a bigger car if available, which is simply untrue. The car was in far worse condition than the smaller car I booked: scratches, dents, scuffed wheels everywhere.I wasn’t allowed to see the damage sheet before signing, and I wasn’t allowed to move the car to inspect it properly. I had to take pictures in a dark, rainy car park. No pre-rental photos were provided by the company, even though the delivery sheet listed 18 existing scratches.On return, they immediately pointed out a tiny scratch and insisted it was new. They refused to release my deposit unless I paid a few hundred euros on the spot. My luggage was already on the shuttle and the driver was leaving, so I was effectively forced to pay to release the 2 grand they hold in deposit. The whole experience felt like a setup to generate small damage fees from customers rather than a normal rental process. I would strongly recommend avoiding Klass Wagen Portugal. P.s They'll give the same reply to every other review they get about this. But you just have to wonder why 20 to 30% of the reviews online show the exact same practice....
