Engaging and entertaining

The guilty act offered an engaging and thought-provoking exploration of how the law judges human behaviour, especially when intentions and circumstances blur the line between innocence and culpability. Framed around the fictional case of Mr Ernest Ramsay, the session cleverly invited the audience to step into the shoes of a jury, transforming what could have been a purely academic discussion into an interactive, immersive experience.Throughout the evening, Lindsay guided us through a series of real true-crime examples that illuminated the central questions: What actually constitutes a guilty act? When does an accident become an offence? And can intoxication ever excuse criminal behaviour? Her ability to translate complex legal principles into clear, relatable terms made the material accessible without ever oversimplifying it.One of the highlights was her nuanced handling of intention versus outcome. Lindsay demonstrated how the law doesn’t simply punish harm—it examines the mindset behind the act. Her discussion of accidental offences, in particular underscored how difficult it can be for juries to reach fair decisions when the facts and the intentions seem to clash. The topic of alcohol and drugs was treated with refreshing clarity. Rather than moralising, Lindsay unpacked the legal rationale behind why intoxication so rarely excuses criminal acts, while still acknowledging the grey areas that courts occasionally grapple with.By the time the audience was asked to determine Mr Ramsay’s fate, we had not only learned the legal definitions but had also experienced the weight of applying them. Lindsay’s skill lay in connecting law to real human dilemmas—reminding us that justice is rarely simple, and guilt is often far more complicated than it first appears.Overall, Lindsay delivered a compelling, well-structured, and intellectually stimulating talk that blended education, storytelling, and audience participation to great effect. Whether one arrived with a deep interest in criminal law or simply casual curiosity, everyone left with a richer understanding of what it truly means to commit a guilty act.
