We traveled with our own guide/driver, who was remarkably patient and friendly, navigating the challenging traffic with ease. The wildlife encounters at the two safari parks were breathtaking; we were fortunate enough to spot two leopards on the second day of our tour, alongside a variety of exotic animals and birds, including wild elephants! We immersed ourselves in Buddhist culture, enjoyed Ayurvedic massages, explored spice and herb gardens, savored fresh seafood on the beach, and visited mountains and tea plantations, all while experiencing traditional dances and local crafts. Our accommodations were beautiful and set away from the hustle of town centers. The food catered to all tastes, whether spicy or mild, with plenty of vegetarian options available. And there was Lion Brand beer! The 11 days offered a wonderful glimpse into Sri Lanka's offerings, though the amount of driving might suggest that a 14-day trip could be even better. A standout aspect of the journey was the warmth and kindness of the Sri Lankan people. Just two weeks after our trip, the country faced devastation from a cyclone. I sincerely hope for a swift recovery for the nation. For those seeking an exotic experience, Sri Lanka is worth considering, and supporting their economy during such times is important.
