Before purchasing, I looked at the specifications for the current model (tech-docs.system76.com), and it showed the motherboard as having four M.2 sockets. I planned on moving two M.2 drives from my old machine into this new Thelio Mira with one M.2 selected in the custom config. When I opened the case of machine received, it was a different motherboard with only three M.2 sockets. So, it was still good, but a little frustrating, as the Parts & Repairs manual was not available for it.Build quality under the hood was great, I'm loving the superfast machine, and Pop OS is making me much happier than Windows 11.
When I noted that a different system suited my needs better very soon after my initial system order, Customer Service promptly responded to my request to cancel my original order and allowed me to place a new order for the other system. Then that system was shipped and arrived within a week. Incredibly timely!
So far, I'm enjoying the computer I purchased, and my overall experience with System76 was seamless and quick. I like what they stand for and what they are doing. That said, while I appreciate Pop!_OS, I still lean toward Zorin OS for its overall feel and usability. However, I’m happy to keep Pop!_OS installed—it works well for most of my needs and I like the Spotlight type feature--that's the main reason I'm keeping it on. The main downside is the Pop!_Shop, which feels slow and glitchy at first, though it does seem to stabilize after repeated use. It’s a minor but noticeable quirk. For everything except audio recording, this setup excels. I’m thrilled to have moved away from the Apple and Microsoft ecosystems, but it's unfortunate I can't record. While the system can run audio software just fine, the fan kicks in frequently, making it impractical for recording. Given the price point, it’s a bit of a missed opportunity, but since I didn’t buy it specifically for that purpose, it’s not a dealbreaker. And, mixing works perfectly well.
I always get the best service from the System76 team. The laptops they build have their dedication and loyalty built with them.I have been a System76 customer for 4 years now and own 4 of their systems. I also have no problem recommending them and supporting them.
The last desktop computer I purchased was a System 76 Wild Dog Pro from 2017 and from the onset I was extremely disappointed with the horrific noise the fans put out when I was doing nothing on it. So I had my concerns about buying the Thelio. But I was quite pleased to discover that my new Thelio made no noticeable noise in its quiescent state. After putting up with the horrible noise from the previous System 76 desktop for all these years it is a pure joy to be able to work in my office in something approaching silence. I am a computational physicist so at some point I'm going to test out the GPU and the computational abilities of the Thelio but by far the most important thing about any computer for me is the noise it puts out and so far I am quite happy with the Thelio.
