As a Veteran, I feel compelled to mention that while my experiences with the service in Grand Junction, Colorado have generally been positive, there have been several instances of missed or delayed appointments, incomplete lab work, and scheduling errors that raised concerns. However, as a former employee, I must express that the atmosphere at the facility was quite toxic. During my time as the Staff Chaplain from April 2020 until my retirement at the end of 2025, I became aware of troubling incidents. For instance, during a casual conversation about childhood nicknames, an unexpected remark regarding plantations introduced discomfort, especially considering the presence of an African American staff member. This shift in topic was inappropriate and created an unsettling environment. Additionally, staff were pressured to validate attendance for new employee orientation despite established protocols. This raises ethical concerns regarding how staff are treated and the integrity of official records. I'm relieved that my colleagues refused to engage in such dubious practices. Furthermore, the practice of initiating detailed investigations based solely on one individual's word poses serious questions about fairness and due process. Such actions can lead to undue stress for employees without proper evidence. I have witnessed the negative impact of this firsthand, as many colleagues confided in me about their unfair treatment, with one even expressing thoughts of self-harm. The misuse of authority is a significant issue, and it's crucial that all parties are treated fairly and that investigations are conducted thoroughly and impartially. A suggestion was made that anyone making allegations should also be subject to the same scrutiny, which I wholeheartedly support. There are too many instances of favoritism and cliques that hinder a healthy work environment.
In December 2019, a government official established guidelines regarding 'Religious Exercise and Liberty in the Workplace.' This matter became significant within the organization, prompting discussions about balancing personal beliefs with professional duties. An incident at a facility in Colorado involved a supervisory chaplain allegedly disregarding protocols by removing religious texts from a specified area, raising concerns about individual rights and workplace harmony. The official reaffirmed the commitment to protect the rights of individuals to express their faith while ensuring a respectful environment for all. This situation highlighted the need for clear policies and mutual respect in accommodating diverse beliefs. During a recent training session, the chaplain reiterated her opposition to placing religious texts in that space, seemingly challenging the official's directive. I felt compelled to express my thoughts but was apprehensive about possible repercussions.
The organization has poorly managed computer systems that have fallen significantly behind the private sector. The encrypted file system is impractical for use with email forms, making it impossible to access sensitive documents on smartphones, which is standard in modern workplaces.

I recently accompanied my father to his primary care appointment at a local facility. I had several questions and concerns regarding his health. The staff member who assisted us was incredibly helpful, addressing all of my inquiries thoroughly. I appreciate her dedication to ensuring that our needs were met.
I am currently waiting for a decision on a remand that was due in late August 2024. Being homeless and over 75 provides some assistance, but it’s frustrating that it’s taking so long for the office to process everything. My mental health team has been a crucial support for me, and despite my experiences as a MST survivor and a Vietnam veteran, I still hold love for my country and feel honored for my service.
This is a response to a tragic incident where a veteran took their life at a memorial park. It highlights the fact that many veterans, especially those with physical and mental health challenges, are overlooked. While the staff at the facility have been kind and professional, the higher-ups in the bureaucracy fail to regulate effectively. Missed appointments and lack of follow-through are common issues. The system is plagued by inefficiencies, and the treatment of veterans often falls short. There’s a pressing need for improvements in the administration to ensure better healthcare access for those who served.
