Varsity Tutors was an overall decent experience, but there are some important things prospective customers should be aware of.

The positive: I did receive the academic help I needed, and the tutor I ultimately worked with was knowledgeable and helpful. The sessions were structured and beneficial, and I was able to make progress in my course.

However, there were a few challenges. The service is quite expensive, especially for specialized or graduate-level courses. In my case, there were limited tutor options available for my specific subject area. I also experienced occasional language barriers and inconsistent internet connections with some tutors, which sometimes made sessions less efficient.

The most frustrating part of the experience was the billing structure. If you plan to stop services, you must call before the start of a new billing cycle. Otherwise, you are automatically billed in advance for the next month of sessions — even if you no longer need them. I was billed just one day into a new cycle and was told the charge could not be reversed. That left a disappointing final impression.

Overall, the tutoring itself was helpful, but I would strongly recommend carefully reviewing the billing policies before signing up.

I purchased tutoring for my college student in architecture. I was assured I could cancel any time and would be refunded for any hours not used. When I cancelled, because the tutor was not a good fit, I was told I could not be refunded for hours not used.

Actually would give a negative one
My daughter Never got the tutor she was promised for college. She called several times that day she was promised a tutor and could not speak to anyone. She also texted them & they said they will provide her with one for this specific night before a test. Never got one.
Try to cancel and almost impossible to reach someone
Finally cancelled and never received my $639 dollars back yet
Just emails saying we are looking into request
Do not use this tutor service
They will take your money immediately over the phone and not fulfill their promise
I am now working with wonderful tutors at another company.

The tutors themselves are great but the company and their customer service sucks. Absolutely sucks. They don’t call back when they say they will, there are hidden rules around billing, and they do not offer refunds even if you are told there will be for hours that you asked to be paused. Just an absolute scam

Avoid the 20-minute sales trap. Varsity Tutors uses high-pressure tactics to customize a program that isn't actually custom. They kept me on the phone for 20 minutes by probing into my fears about my child's academic future under the guise of personalized pricing. However, a friend called, spent only 5 minutes on the phone, and was quoted the exact same rates: $349 for 4 hours or $639 for 8 hours. The consultation is just an emotional play to get you to buy. Don't waste your time.

Initial advisor signed my daughter up for 8 SAT prep tutoring sessions. After the 8 sessions we continued to be billed. We had told the advisor that my daughter would not need tutoring sessions after taking the winter SATs and she assured us that 8 sessions was perfectly doable with no mention of recurring fees.

After 8 sessions we continued to be billed and after talking to customer support, they said that this in fact was a monthly subscription and they could no refund any money that was already charged even though we were no longer using their services and had no need for SAT prep. We had called them just days after the charge and they assured us that nothing could be done.

There is no way to cancel online and their customer service is absolutely horrid. Don't use this service, total scam.

Very happy with the tutors we have for my wife. The extra help and teaching skills of the tutors is definitely worth the time and money for the knowledge and understanding of class materials and preparing for the mid term and final exams. Thank you

Tutors changed scheduled times and claimed sessions that where not attended. This caused problems for study sessions scheduled before testing and scheduled study periods. The service was not worth the expense.

Great tutor, but terrible billing experience

I want to start by highlighting that my tutor is fantastic. He has incredible patience and is a great support. However, I have to express my frustration regarding the billing issue. I paid $349.00 for four hours of tutoring and have only used 2.5 hours. Recently, I noticed that my account was charged $349.00 again without my consent. When I reached out to the billing department, they claimed I had authorized the autopay feature but could not provide any documentation to verify that. They also refused to disclose the representative's name I spoke with. After paying for four hours and only using 2.5, they are now denying my request for a refund of the latest $349.00 charge. This experience reflects poorly on how the company manages its operations.
