IVA is truly the most effective programme of voice instruction. I train with Master Teacher Jeffrey Skouson. Every lesson I can hear a positive difference, eg split resonance and development of this, within 30 minutes. I think it’s ’as close to a magic button’ that you can ever get. IVA Master Teachers have trained some of the most prominent vocal coaches in the industry - nearly everyone on the chart uses this technique. You can hear the similar exercises on ‘famous’ artists’ websites. IVA and associating techniques where most teachers made the step from SLS is widely critiqued. Today I engaged in the music and drama expo with some of the core principles of IVA, pay particular attention to the wording of these teachers - mainly classically trained academics. This particular academic discounted the technique as there were a minority where the technique did not work for (and yes they lectured at UCL) and she had the ‘rehabilitate them’. The worst thing you can do is try and lesson and hear the difference for yourself. Don’t knock it till you can’t try it. However the exercises are best practice and work for everyone I know. IVA has made me the teacher I am today. In my experience, IVA is the most comprehensive contemporary voice teacher training program out there. The master teachers and the board of directors are fantastic and truly care about your success as a teacher. The education is incredibly solid, and they are always refining it, so they are on the cutting edge of vocal pedagogy. IVA is a fantastic resource for vocal teachers and performance coaches. The master teachers and mentors are excellent coaches and there are significant online educational materials that lay out the pedagogy structure. Personally I like their goal to be agnostic and cause and effect in their approach to vocal technique, that I can bring any other tools I wish to my teaching practice without fearing that I'm not 'in line' with the teaching organization. As long as I use the touchstone tools that are helpful, and adhere to the principles of doing no harm, and cause and effect in the voice, I'm in good standing and have a wealth of tools available to me. The comradery and networking between teachers may even be my favorite part of being a teacher in this organization.
