I recently approached Co-op Funeralcare following the sudden death of my mother.

My partner had previously used Co-op for her own mother’s funeral in 2025 and received what she described as compassionate, supportive and dignified care. Based on that experience, we chose Co-op again.

Unfortunately, my experience was very different.

Before my mother had even been brought into their care, the emphasis was repeatedly placed on a 50% deposit within 48 hours, soft credit checks and full payment requirements. While I understand that companies have policies, the timing and tone of the communication felt heavily financial at a moment when I was still in shock and trying to process my loss.

I was also informed that if a soft credit check deemed me “high risk,” full payment could be required upfront. Receiving this information so early in the process, before even knowing my mother was safely in their care, felt insensitive and poorly handled.

At no point was flexibility offered despite explaining the circumstances and referencing a recent comparable experience within the same organisation. I have money it’s just an unexpected bill and I needed a little time that was all.

I have since arranged my mother’s funeral with an independent local funeral director who has agreed to invoice after the funeral and offer a staged payment plan without making the early stages feel transactional.

Funerals are not retail purchases. Families are grieving. The first interaction should focus on care and dignity — not credit scoring.

I hope Co-op reviews how these policies are communicated, particularly in the earliest and most vulnerable moments for bereaved families.

We recently entrusted Co-op Funeral care, Daventry, Foundry Walk with my mum’s funeral, and I cannot thank them enough for the care, compassion and professionalism they showed us during such a difficult time.
From the very beginning, Sarah was an absolute diamond. She made everything feel manageable and was always there to guide us through each step of the planning process with kindness and patience. Nothing was ever too much trouble.
Our celebrant, Tracey Bloor, was outstanding. She worked closely with us to prepare the eulogy and delivered a beautiful, heartfelt service that perfectly reflected Mum’s life. Alongside Andrew from Co-op, the service was handled with such dignity and warmth.
The whole team were fantastic, professional, compassionate, and incredibly supportive. We are so grateful for everything they did for the family.
Thank you all. I would absolutely recommend them.

I am absolutely appalled with co op car insurance. I'm a caretaker on a residential estate in Feltham middx. I have an 84yr old man here, co op accused him of having a car accident and cancelled his car insurance on 2nd Feb, it took him 2 hours last week, to walk to the local shop and back to get milk, I'm absolutely disgusted with the way he has been treated by co op, even after finding the evidence, to not be his vehicle, they are not reinstating his policy. Absolutely disgusting behaviour and I'm taking this to the media. I've already reported to urban scoop and will continue reporting this to as many news outlets that I can.

what store states clearly, when looking at opening hours, on its website says that it is open until 11pm - then states that orders cannot be made because it's not taking orders - this is very poor customer service. Not only that but the opening hours listed on it's website as in this case with Co op Broadway Didcot saying it is open then not on justeat...this is totally misleading!!!!!!

They should focus on the funeral branch…

They should focus on the funeral branch of their business. They keep burying good customer service!- A week without internet here- coop and Openreach confirm external fault but keep mentioning that we have to pay for an engineer to come to the house to check for internal fault- one star only to write this review and for the fact that texh support agents continue to be professional and try- formal complaint not addressed yet. Management rather seems to go enjoy their weekend firstFully aware there are bigger issues in the world than internet, but in the context Coop fails in spectecular fashion. Overpromise, underdeliver unfortunately.Anyone who has issues, check keywords communications ombudsman, CISAS, Ofcom, entitlement to compensation etc.

Forcing substitute items on customers despite saying no substitutes!

Re: 816588Placed an online order. Specified NO SUBSTITUTES PLEASE. Yet they send me substitutes. Due to dietary requirements there are products I do NOT consume hence the no substitutes please! If a customer says no substitutes this should be respected! Customers should not be forced to receive items they do not want and then the customer has to waste time and energy physically going to the store to return it to get a refund! This is ridiculous practice on behalf of co-op.
