Frustratingly Complicated Account Opening Process

I have tried to avoid filing a complaint, but the account opening process has become unnecessarily complicated. Opening a bank account in the UK should be straightforward and efficient today. However, the service's procedures feel outdated and overly invasive. After initiating the application through the app, I never received a clear decision. Instead, the support team repeatedly reached out via email requesting additional documents, such as my Tax Self Assessment and even a passport image, despite having already submitted valid government photo identification. They claimed these requests were mandatory under UK regulations, but they seem to go far beyond what is reasonable. This contradicts the expectations set by regulatory authorities, which state that firms should not collect excessive or irrelevant customer information. Due to this unreasonable process, I now plan to file a formal complaint with the relevant ombudsman service and seek compensation for the time and inconvenience caused, as per standard guidance.

Quick to open, but features are lacking

I opened an account quite easily in about 10 minutes with just my passport. However, despite an attractive interest rate, a critical feature like Standing Orders is not available. I asked if there was a timeline for when Standing Orders would be implemented, but no date was provided. I will keep the account for a few months, but if Standing Orders don’t become available, I will likely close it.

Felt like I was under scrutiny

I truly regret applying for an account with this bank. The experience was highly invasive and felt more like a criminal investigation than a simple savings application. I started the process through their app due to attractive fixed-term rates. However, within a day, they requested unnecessarily detailed documents, including my job titles and employment history. The most frustrating part is that I provided everything they asked for, yet for nearly a week, I received no response at all. Eventually, I opened an account with another bank that offered a better rate, greater stability, and a smoother app experience. Approval took only 10 minutes without any unreasonable checks. This experience has shown me that there are much better options available. I cannot recommend this bank to anyone; their onboarding process is slow, invasive, and disproportionate to the deposit amount.

Caught in a cycle of delays

I've been making significant efforts to get the customer service team to call me back, but they have missed the callback on two occasions, despite assurances via email. It feels like there's no effective system in place for arranging calls. Without a direct line or live chat, it’s frustrating to get things moving. Their responses have also been inconsistent, requesting different information as time goes on, seemingly depending on who I speak with.

Good current account overall

A decent current account; the app is well-designed, and they now offer easy-access savings accounts, which is a nice addition. I'm a big fan of digital banks, and this one ranks among the better options. The only downside is that faster payments aren't instant, and the longest I've waited for funds to be credited was two days. Aside from the faster payments issue, everything else works smoothly.

App issues and lack of support

The app is quite problematic and buggy. There's no chat feature or customer support available. I've only had my account for a few days and am already considering closing it. Higher interest rates do not compensate for the lack of competence. My debit card doesn’t even work properly.

Impressive current account with competitive interest

I opened an account in under ten minutes and received my debit card two days later. Excellent service! It seems that most negative reviews come from individuals who don’t fully understand banking procedures. For instance, some complain about not knowing they needed to fund their current account before opening a fixed-rate bond. It’s also common for banks to set withdrawal limits to protect customers from fraud, and it’s usually straightforward to request a temporary increase in that limit. Setting up direct debits also requires patience as new sort codes are generated. You can't fault this bank if the system doesn't update immediately.
