⭐ 1★ Review – Lulu Publishing
I sent Lulu a completed book and what followed was one of the worst publishing experiences I’ve ever had.
I was told to “reformat” my file but given no clear, usable instructions on what that actually required. That began a long email loop – around nine messages – where they kept sending files back for me to upload. Every time the upload failed. No proper explanation. No real solution. Just another delay.
I ordered printed proofs several times. None ever arrived.
In the end I cancelled the project – not because the book wasn’t ready, but because the system simply does not work if anything goes wrong.
The real problem is this: there is no way to speak to a human being.
No phone support.
No live help.
Everything happens through slow emails that take days between replies while your project is stuck.
For a service aimed at independent authors this is completely impractical. Not everyone is an IT specialist.
How is an older author supposed to get through this?
How is someone disabled meant to deal with repeated technical failures?
How does anyone who isn’t highly computer-literate publish a book here?
Publishing should be a creative milestone. This turned into a technical endurance test.
This didn’t just fail to deliver a book – it ruined the entire experience.
I have now taken my work elsewhere.
Independent authors need real support from real humans. Without that, this platform is simply not fit for purpose.
I recently published my first book through Lulu.com, and it was an incredibly smooth and empowering experience. The platform's user-friendly tools made uploading my manuscript, designing the cover, and setting up print options a breeze—even for a newbie like me. When i received my own copy of my book i was impressed by the quality of the impressions ( i have a lot of my artwork in it and they came out great ). When I ran into a minor issue with one of my orders (a copie was lost in the shipping), their customer service team was fantastic. I reached out via email, and they responded promptly—within hours—with clear instructions and a quick resolution, including a refund.
PROS: Love their website as the platform is a lot easier to use than Amazon and less buggy too. The cover designer is a breeze and extremely user friendly for amateurs like me. Printing houses I contacted always found big problems with adapting my cover for some reason, but not Lulu. I basically just slipped in the images for front back and spine and hey presto, it was done!
CONS: 1) The lack of any communication to provide an indication of progress on the printing and delivery of orders is something that this company could improve on. It appears they might be using Third Party printing houses located in the country or state of the customer, which is okay, but the emailing of updates on progress as a courtesy would be appreciated. 2) Their AI robot is hopeless. It often provides entirely the wrong information, then it automatically closes the case, which some customers might consider rude. If you want to chat with a real human you have to email back, which does at least happen within 24 hours. I am not complaining about the human contact aspect. I am complaining about the apparent stupidity and rudeness of the AI chatbot.
As an author, my experience was extremely disappointing. The customer service was poor, and the printed hardcopies were of terrible quality, requiring payment each time I wanted to review and make changes. Communication was frustrating, as I often encountered an ineffective automated response system. Additionally, I received emails stating that my books were rejected or did not meet certain standards, along with vague instructions on how to improve them. Ultimately, I felt that my content was not secure.
A genuinely professional service. So far, I have never been let down by their offerings, unlike another print-on-demand provider that I will refrain from naming out of kindness. The books produced are well-crafted, reasonably priced, the website is intuitive, and most importantly, the process is quick.
Be cautious with this service as they frequently overcharge for postage. They cite uncertainty regarding the printing location, which justifies inflated prices. My last order of six A5-sized books had a postage fee of £7.39, yet they were sent via 2nd class (Large Letter Sized), which generally costs around £4. This problem intensifies with larger orders.
This service often overcharges for postage, so exercise caution. They claim ignorance regarding the printing location, which leads to inflated prices. My last order of six A5-sized books had a postage fee of £7.39, yet they were sent via 2nd class (Large Letter Sized), which should only cost about £4. This issue worsens with larger orders.
It's challenging to prepare a manuscript for submission. The detailed instructions aim to ensure that authors complete all necessary work, but there’s no opportunity for personalized feedback or support. My partner recently finished a significant historical manuscript, and I'm concerned she wouldn't meet your requirements independently. Additionally, it would be beneficial to offer incentives for those preparing manuscripts instead of bombarding everyone with unsolicited promotions to print more copies of existing works. I've been using this service for years, but many of my older accepted manuscripts no longer appear on my account.
